On 13 October 2026, our Year 4 students visited Devín Castle, one of Slovakia’s most significant historical landmarks, for a field trip combining history, culture and exploration.
Located at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers, Devín Castle offers a unique setting in which students can experience the connections between history, geography and cultural heritage.
Discovering History Through Experience
During their visit, students had the opportunity to explore the historic castle grounds and experience a place that has witnessed centuries of change.
Seeing a historical landmark first-hand provides a different perspective from studying history through textbooks and classroom discussions. Students can observe the remains of historical structures, consider how people lived in different periods and begin to understand the importance of preserving cultural heritage.
The visit also provided opportunities to develop observation, curiosity and critical thinking, encouraging students to ask questions about the past and consider how historical places help us understand the development of societies.
Connecting History and Geography
Devín Castle’s location provides an opportunity to explore the relationship between geography and human settlement.
Overlooking the meeting point of two major European rivers, the site demonstrates how natural landscapes have influenced the development of communities, transportation routes and historically important locations.
For our Year 4 students, experiencing this landscape first-hand offered an opportunity to consider how geography and history are connected.
